The usual account credits the streamer Kai Cenat and his circle in New York, who were reportedly using it on stream around 2021. By 2023 it had left the internet entirely. Oxford University Press named rizz its word of the year for 2023, which is usually the point where a slang term becomes safe for adults and therefore slightly less fun for teenagers. Nobody claims to have invented the word outright, and the earliest uses are hard to pin down, so treat any precise origin date with caution.

- Using it in a serious setting. Rizz in a job reference or a wedding speech lands as a joke whether you meant it or not. Keep it casual.
- Treating it as pure looks. Attractiveness alone is not rizz. Rizz is what you do with the conversation. Someone can be striking and still have famously bad rizz.
- Announcing your own rizz sincerely. Saying “I have great rizz” without irony is the fastest way to prove the opposite. Self-reference works best as a complaint.
- Assuming it’s an insult. It isn’t. Rizz on its own is positive. Only “L rizz” or “no rizz” turns it around.
