What is Poly AI? Most people who search for it mean PolyBuzz, an AI character chat app at polybuzz.ai that was called Poly.AI until November 2024. The same name belongs to PolyAI, a London company at poly.ai that builds voice agents to answer customer service calls. The two are unrelated: different companies, different addresses, different customers.

We traced the app’s names through the Internet Archive’s copies of its websites and store listings, checked on 18 October 2026. It started in May 2023 as PolySpeak, an app for learning languages. It became Poly.AI between late October 2023 and early January 2024, then PolyBuzz in the second half of November 2024. At no point did it use the address poly.ai, which PolyAI had made its main website in early 2022. That gap between the name and the address explains most of the confusion.

What is Poly AI?

Poly AI is the old name of PolyBuzz, a free app and website where you chat with AI characters that other users have made, or build your own. Characters range from anime figures to celebrities and invented companions, each answering in its own voice. Behind them is a large language model, the same kind of AI that powers ChatGPT.

On polybuzz.ai itself, the menu offers Discover, Generate Image, Create Character, Subscribe, Coins and Opals, the last two being in-app currencies.

The company behind the app is Cloud Whale Interactive Technology LLC, which gives a mailing address in Wilmington, Delaware. On 19 October 2026 its Google Play listing, “PolyBuzz: Chat with AI Friends”, showed more than 50 million downloads. Google Play rates it Mature 17+, while its own terms say users must be 18 or older.

Google answers the search “poly ai” with both companies, PolyBuzz first and PolyAI second, but people nearly always mean the app.

The Poly AI name, dated: from PolySpeak to PolyBuzz

The app changed its name twice, but its store pages never moved. Google Play kept the same app ID, ai.socialapps.speakmaster, and the App Store the same number, id6449190344, so the history can be followed one dated copy at a time.

Today's PolyBuzz listing as "PolySpeak - AI Character Chat", in the Internet Archive's copy of 25 October 2023, viewed on 18 October 2026. The address in the archive bar is the one PolyBuzz still uses. The PEGI 3 badge is the European rating the archive happened to save.

Two things stand out.

  • It was a language app first. The Play ID still says “speakmaster”, and PolyBuzz’s privacy policy still sits at an address containing /speakmaster/.
  • The switch to PolyBuzz overlapped. polybuzz.ai was up by 20 November 2024, while polyai.ai still said Poly.AI on 3 December.

Why do people mix up Poly AI and PolyAI?

Because the chat app took a name that reads like a web address it never had. “Poly.AI”, with the dot, looks exactly like poly.ai. But when the app adopted the name around the start of 2024, poly.ai had already been PolyAI’s main website for about two years.

The app lived at three other addresses in turn. On 21 November 2024 its site at polyai.ai still carried the Poly.AI name, and told visitors to “Download the poly.ai App”. Anyone who typed that into the address bar reached a company selling call-centre software.

Older reviews and the Reddit community r/polyai, which ranks for “poly ai”, still use the old name for the chat app.

What is PolyAI, the company at poly.ai?

PolyAI is a London company that builds AI voice agents: software that answers a business’s customer service calls, handles bookings and payments, and routes callers, without a human on the line. You can’t sign up for it as a consumer. You meet it when you phone a company that uses it.

The poly.ai home page in a phone browser on 18 October 2026, with the PolyAI wordmark, a Book a demo button, the heading The Frontier of Agentic Dialog, the line PolyAI builds dialog agents that handle your most critical enterprise conversations, and buttons reading Talk to an expert and Try free

The top of poly.ai in a phone browser, 18 October 2026. Everything on it is aimed at businesses: "Book a demo", "Talk to an expert" and "enterprise conversations".

“Try free” doesn’t open a chat either. We pressed it on 19 October 2026, logged out, and it led to a sign-up page for Dialog Studio, PolyAI’s tool for building call agents. It wants a name and an email address, or a Google or GitHub sign-in. The Trial Agreement behind the tick box says whoever signs up is “an authorised representative of the company or organisation that you work for”, and that the free trial is “for internal evaluation and testing purposes only”. “Book a demo” asks for a work email, a role and a phone number. We stopped at both forms. To hear the product without one, its call recordings page, headed “Real calls answered by PolyAI agents, unedited”, has four, among them a hotel booking and a billing query.

PolyAI's sign-up page at studio.poly.ai, reached from the Try free button on poly.ai in a phone-width browser on 19 October 2026, with the headings Build with Wren and Run on Dialog-RSN-1, a Create your account box reading PolyAI automates customer calls for businesses of every size, empty Name and Email address fields, and a box to agree to the Trial Agreement and Privacy Policy

Where poly.ai's "Try free" button led on 19 October 2026: an account sign-up at studio.poly.ai, seen logged out in a phone-width browser. The line under the heading says who it's for, "businesses of every size". We left the form empty.

Its About page says it was founded in 2017 by machine learning researchers from the University of Cambridge, and lists about 250 employees in five offices, including London and New York. Nikola Mrkšić, a co-founder, is chief executive. In December 2025 PolyAI announced an $86 million Series D funding round, taking its total past $200 million, and named Marriott, Caesars Entertainment and Foot Locker among its customers.

Its pricing page charges by the minute of calls and asks how many calls you get a year before quoting. A voice agent is one kind of AI agent: a model that takes actions, not just one that chats. PolyAI has nothing to do with chat characters and has never been called PolyBuzz.

Who is behind PolyBuzz?

The PolyBuzz app is published by Cloud Whale Interactive Technology LLC, the same company that published PolySpeak in 2023. It is the seller or developer on every archived store copy we checked, under all three names. The website is another matter: polybuzz.ai’s own terms, updated on 1 June 2026, say it is operated by Singularity Mutual Entertainment Culture Media Limited in Hong Kong (archived copy, 3 October 2026).

The app’s privacy policy, updated on 23 December 2025, and terms of use, updated on 18 May 2026, give Cloud Whale’s mailing address as a suite in Wilmington, Delaware. Neither names anyone in charge; the data protection officer is just “our project manager”.

Older addresses tie the brands together. socialapps.ai, the name in the app’s package ID, showed Poly.AI in 2024 and PolyBuzz in January 2025. Since at least September 2025 it has shown the same page design under a third name, PobPop, which we could not find on the US App Store.

How to tell PolyBuzz and PolyAI apart

The quickest test is the address bar. The rest helps when all you have is a name.

PolyBuzz (the “Poly AI” app) PolyAI (the company)
Website polybuzz.ai poly.ai
Earlier names Poly.AI, and PolySpeak before that Always PolyAI, one word
Company Cloud Whale Interactive Technology LLC, Delaware (app). The website’s terms name a Hong Kong company PolyAI Ltd, London
What it does Chat and roleplay with AI characters Voice agents that answer customer service calls
Who it’s for Adults, under its own terms Businesses with large call volumes
Logo A purple ghost face A dotted circle beside the word PolyAI
Main buttons Discover, Create Character, Subscribe, Coins Book a demo, Talk to an expert, Try free
On your phone Google Play: “PolyBuzz: Chat with AI Friends” No consumer app. It answers when you call a company
Price Free with ads, plus subscriptions and coins Per minute of calls, quoted after a form

If you are still unsure, three checks settle it.

  1. Read the address. polybuzz.ai is the chat app, and poly.ai is the company. polyai.ai, the app’s 2024 address, forwarded to polybuzz.ai from December 2024.
  2. Look at the first buttons. Characters, coins and “Create Character” mean PolyBuzz. “Book a demo” means PolyAI.
  3. Check the developer on an app listing. PolyBuzz’s is Cloud Whale Interactive Technology LLC, and its Google Play address ends in id=ai.socialapps.speakmaster.

Is Poly AI the same as PolyBuzz?

Yes. If you mean the character chat app, Poly AI and PolyBuzz are the same app from the same company, renamed in November 2024. The store listings kept their IDs, so it is the same app under a new name, not a replacement.

The ghost logo carried over, and so did the tagline “Deeper, Discreet Conversations”, used on polyai.ai in October 2024 and still in polybuzz.ai’s Google title in October 2026. Any review about “Poly.AI” characters is about PolyBuzz. Comparisons with Character.AI and lists of alternatives are about features, not names, so they aren’t covered here.

Is Poly AI for adults only?

Yes, under its own rules. PolyBuzz’s terms say users must be at least 18, and the app asks for a date of birth on first use. Its privacy policy says users under 18 are refused service.

The store ratings rose as the app changed purpose.

  • As PolySpeak, in May 2023, the App Store rated it 12+.
  • As Poly.AI, in March 2024, it was 17+ on the App Store and Teen on Google Play.
  • As PolyBuzz, archived App Store copies from December 2025 to 4 October 2026 show 18+. Google Play has shown Mature 17+ since March 2026, so today Play rates it 17+ while the terms say 18+.

In the UK, the terms add an age check by outside providers such as Ondato or Yoti. Elsewhere, a typed date of birth is the only gate. Parents may also find our guide to teen texting abbreviations useful. How its filters, privacy and paid plans hold up is a question for hands-on testing. This page is about which Poly AI is which.

Where Poly AI works right now

Our checks on 18 October 2026, repeated on 19 October, found a mixed picture.

  • Google Play: live, updated on 21 September 2026.
  • App Store: the PolyBuzz page that search results still list returned “not found” in the US, UK and Indian stores on both days, and Apple’s search found no PolyBuzz on the 18th. The Internet Archive’s copy from 4 October 2026 shows it live. Neither Apple nor the developer has said why, so check the App Store yourself.
  • Website: from a home broadband connection in Delhi, polybuzz.ai showed only an error page. On 19 October we went back as a guest, in phone and desktop browsers, to open a chat with a character, and got the same page, so we couldn’t.
  • app.polybuzz.ai: this one loads from India, but it is a showcase page. It has pictures of the app and links to the main website and PolyBuzz’s social accounts, with no characters to pick and nothing to chat with.
polybuzz.ai opened in a phone browser from Delhi, India, on 18 October 2026, showing the PolyBuzz ghost mascot peeking out of a folder above the words 403 Forbiden and This service is temporarily unavailable in your region

polybuzz.ai in a phone browser on a home connection in Delhi, India, 18 October 2026: "403 Forbiden" (sic) and "This service is temporarily unavailable in your region." The mascot is the same ghost as on the 2024 Poly.AI site.

The page gives no reason, but the archive saved the site normally two days earlier, so the block looks regional. New to terms like “model” and “agent”? Our AI jargon glossary explains them.

What we checked

Our checks were made on 18 October 2026, and the live ones repeated on 19 October, from India, in Chrome with phone and desktop profiles, plus saved copies in the Internet Archive. On the 19th we also tried both products as a logged-out visitor.

Check What we found
Store copies, 2023 to 2026 Same app IDs throughout. Cloud Whale named as seller or developer every time
PolyBuzz’s terms and privacy policy 18+, date of birth on first use. App: Cloud Whale, Delaware. Website: a Hong Kong company
App Store on 18 and 19 October 2026 Page not found in the US, UK and Indian stores
polybuzz.ai from Delhi, 18 and 19 October “403 Forbiden”, unavailable in your region, so no guest chat
app.polybuzz.ai, 19 October A showcase page with no chat
poly.ai “Try free” and “Book a demo”, 19 October Both stop at a form: a Dialog Studio trial account for businesses, or a demo request

We didn’t get round the block with a VPN, install the Android app or open an account on either site, so PolyBuzz’s chats, filters and paid plans are untested here. Apps change often, so check on the day.

Questions people ask

Is PollyBuzz the same app as PolyBuzz?

Yes. “PollyBuzz”, with two Ls, is a common misspelling of PolyBuzz, the character chat app at polybuzz.ai. Searches for it lead to PolyBuzz’s own website and app listings.

What was Poly AI called before?

PolySpeak. The app first appeared in May 2023 as “PolySpeak-Learn Language by AI”, a language-learning app. It turned into a character chat app later that year, was renamed Poly.AI around the start of 2024, and became PolyBuzz in November 2024.

Did PolyAI change its name to PolyBuzz?

No. PolyAI, the London voice company at poly.ai, still uses its own name. Only the chat app called Poly.AI was renamed PolyBuzz.

Is poly.ai the website for the Poly AI app?

No. poly.ai has been the main site of PolyAI, the voice company, since early 2022. The chat app’s website is polybuzz.ai.

Is Poly AI free?

PolyBuzz is free to download and use, with ads, and sells subscriptions and coins in the app. PolyAI sells only to businesses, by the minute of calls. Its “Try free” button opens a trial of its agent-building tool for companies, not a chat app.

The short version

“Poly AI” usually means PolyBuzz, a character chat app that started as PolySpeak in 2023, became Poly.AI around the start of 2024 and was renamed PolyBuzz in November 2024. It never used poly.ai, which belongs to PolyAI, a London company that builds voice agents for call centres. To tell them apart, read the address: polybuzz.ai is the app, poly.ai is the company.
